This year was a pretty fruitful year for exploring Toy Fair – it’s been my experience as an editor to a LEGO fan magazine that I usually get shunned by everyone else. That didn’t happen this year, as I got many e-mails inviting me to visit. Playmobil wasn’t one of those booths, but is usually one that books appointments pretty easily.
A little background here – LEGO and Playmobil are competing brands, so while their toys are different in makeup (you build environments with LEGO, you buy environments with Playmobil), they tend to mirror each other. The good thing about them is that they are playsets with accessories and figures. The bad thing about them is that they are limited in terms of what they allow – basically, these are toys for limited (usually realistic) role play. That said, the sale of figure is distinctive enough for me to usually look for the astronaut figure and buy him.
The Playmobil portfolio was out in force at Toy Fair with some pretty interesting sets presented. Here are a few that I saw when I visited.
Magic – kinda generic as a theme name goes, but Frozen was already taken.
Spirit Riding Free –from the animated Netflix show. My youngest niece watches this show, so I have a very vague idea of the show.
City Action – SWAT and fire vehicles
City Life –starting with school stuff, then pet-themed.
Dragons (How to Train Your Dragon 3)
Family Fun
Ghostbusters
Space
Playmobil The Movie
Miscellaneous
Most of these sets have not been released yet, so you can go to the Playmobil page for more info.
